For those who had the privilege to know School Founder James Dick during his life, any story of his unpretentiousness comes as no surprise. Such as the tale of his old, white Mercedes Benz. With the sale of Dick Broadcasting, Mr. Dick was worth a considerable fortune and could afford any manner of new vehicle. But he loved that car, and only reluctantly agreed to buy a replacement after driving it for more than 20 years. It was one of the few decisions that he regretted. Though, he certainly would have been pleased with the car’s final destination. With the purchase of a new car, Mr. Dick’s son, Allen, took the Mercedes to his home in Greensboro, N.C., where he, and eventually his sons, planned to drive it. As the impracticalities of driving a decades-old car became apparent, Allen realized that it could serve a much bigger purpose. Demonstrating the same generosity so closely associated with his father, Allen, currently the president of Dick Broadcasting Company, recently donated the car to the Joy of Music School. It seems just right that upon sale, that much-loved vehicle now is bringing much needed funding to Mr. Dick’s much-loved school.
